Tailor Maid Studio
Birger Sivertsen
Late November 2004 we entered the studio to record a "pre-production" for this album. We recorded 7 songs in 5 days (the album will have 8 songs, but the last one wasn`t finished). Doing this, we have had a lot of time to listen to the songs and find out how they really sound. Finding out that the tempo or arrangement isn`t right, is not fun while recording the album for real!
As Bjørnar left us early 2004, we also lost the one writing many of the songs on "Åsmund Frægdegjevar". Luckily, this "enlightened" Espen G, and he has made some fantastic songs during the last 6 months of 2004. Siv Lena and our new guitarist Ketil have also written 2 songs.
We will not make a concept-album, like "Åsmund Frægdegjevar" this time. A professional writer, Birger Sivertsen and his wife Kristin have written the lyrics. He is an expert on Norwegian folklore, and that`s the theme on this album. The lyrics will be much easier to understand this time, as they are written in modern Norwegian (nynorsk) or dialect :-) As the lyrics were finished before we started making the music, the songs are even more focused on the melodies and there will be more singing on this album. The music is more varied, but we think that the you will still hear the essence of Lumsk!
There will be 8 songs on the album:
-Nøkken
-Trolltind
-Dunker
-Allvis
-Åsgårdsreia
-Perpålsa
-Blæster
-Byttingen
Day 1 Monday January the 3rd
Alf and Stein Bratland (studio tech) started the day changing all the drumheads and tuning the drumkit. Thanks to TRE`45 for opening their store for us even though they were closed! After setting up the drumkit the way he wanted, Alf recorded the drums on "Trolltind". Eystein played the "cue-guitar". After this we recorded the drums on "Allvis". On this song we used the pre-production as "cuing", and Alf played along with the guitars, synths, and vocals from this recording. The local newspaper from Eystein`s homeplace called for an interview.
A great start - plan to record 3 songs tomorrow!
Day 2 Tuesday January the 4th
Recorded the drums on "Dunker", Blæster" and "Åsgårdsreia", as planned. As we had prepared the recording well and could use the pre-production as a cue-track, the recording has gone much faster than expected. As a result of this, Alf started recording "Nøkken" that was planned for tomorrow. Espen G played the melodies on a huge midi-keyboard so Alf didn`t loose the track :-) Just one song left! Eystein set up his guitar-rig in the studio, and started recording the clean guitars on "Trolltind" when the rest had left the studio. He has borrowed a Gibson Les Paul (Thanks, Kurt!) and a Fender Stratocaster (Thanks, Stein!) in addition to his own ESP Baritone. This means he has 3 totally different guitars, but still doesn`t know which one to use where...
Day 3 Wednesday January the 5th
Siv Lena came down to make sure the drums on "Nøkken" were right, and recorded the violin at the same time. She also recorded "Perpålsa" before the drums were recorded, as this made it easier for the rest of us to get the right "folk touch" on it. She used her acoustic violin first, but decided to dub some parts with her electric violin. Alf recorded "Perpålsa" and is now finished! Actually we had planned to use the whole week on the drums, but it doesn`t seem to be neccessary. Eystein recorded some clean guitars on "Allvis" and "Trolltind".
Day 4 Thursday January the 6th
Eystein continued recording the clean guitars on "Blæster" and "Dunker". Siv Lena came with her third violin and dubbed the melodies on the choruses on "Nøkken" and "Perpålsa". Eystein and Alf met a photographer in the evening, who we will probably use for the photos on this album.
Day 5 Friday January the 7th
Eystein finished recording the clean guitars, and continued recording some of the heavy, distorted parts :-) Ketil started recording his guitars in the evening after work.
Day 6 Saturday January the 8th
Ketil recorded clean guitars. Used Kurt`s Les Paul and Magnus` Jackson.
Sunday January the 9th
Day off - planning next week and deciding the tracklist on the album.
Day 7 Monday January the 10 th
Espen H started recording the bass today! Hired some basses and other stuff from TRE`45, to find the right sound.
Day 8 Tuesday January the 11th
Recorded more bass. Eystein was supposed to record some guitars in the evening, but his amp broke down...
Day 9 Wednesday January the 12th
Espen H finished his first part of the recordingsession. Has left some lines on 2 songs, but will wait until the guitars are recorded. Eystein had his amp fixed, and recorded "Nøkken" and "Blæster".
Day 10 Thursday January the 13th
Siv Lena finsihed recording violin today! Eystein re-recorded "Nøkken", and started on "Perpålsa". Siv Lena and Ketil have changed some parts on "Perpålsa", so we had to use some time to correct it on the PC.
In the evening Rune from Eternal-Terror visited us for the 1st part of a studioreport!
Day 11 Friday January the 14th
Eystein recording guitars... Ketil took over in the evening.
Day 12 Saturday January the 15th
Ketil continued recording, and Steinar started singing!
Sunday January the 16th
Day off. Recovering after Mayhem/Chton/Minas Tirith/The Apparatus.
Day 13 Monday January the 17 th
Stine started recording today! We never finish at 16.00, so Steinar took over in the evening.
Day 14 Tuesday January the 18th
Eystein started the day listening to some of the takes from the previous days. Stine recorded some more, and Ketil continued... Few pictures lately, will take some pretty soon! Since we started recording Espen has been working day and night with the arrangements for our guest musicians. This weekend we will record the flute, trumpet, bassoon and a string quartet! Exciting...
Day 15 Wednesday January the 19th
Steinar recorded some vocals, and Espen H recorded some of the bass he had left...
Day 16 Thursday January the 20th
Our first guest musician performed on our album today! Andreas K. Elvenes, known from bands as "The 3rd and the Mortal" and "Bitch Cassidy". He did the vocals on "Åsgårdsreia" and some choir on "Trolltind". He has an incredible deep and dark voice. (sounds like David Bowie - a few octaves deeper :-) As Stein is responsible for this album (it`s his studio!) he feels obliged to warn every girl out there - you might be pregnant just by listening to Andreas` performance! He has a manful voice...
Our designer Per dropped by and showed us the first sketches of his work with the cover, nice!
Day 17 Friday January the 21st
Started the day with Annette Foss and her flute. Annette also played on "Åsmund Frægdegjevar". She finished in a few hours, and we even recorded some parts that weren`t planned. Later we brought in two guys from the jazz scene in Trondheim. They are both studying at the "Institute of Music" and play in many bands.
They really added a new touch to some of our songs...
In the evening the student magazine "Under Dusken" came to make an article about out recording!
Ketil recorded guitars in the evening.
Day 18 Saturday January the 22nd
Per Christian Jørstad, who played the cello on "Åsmund Frægdegjevar" came with the rest of his string-quartet. They recorded "Trolltind", "Byttingen", "Blæster" and "Åsgårdsreia". Espen G wants to remove as much synth as possible. from the album, so the string-quartet have to play a lot! They will continue next Tuesday.
Had a band-meeting in the evening, and listened to what has been recorded so far
- we have enough to keep our fingers on next week, too!
Day 19 Sunday January the 23rd
Today Ketil re-recorded some of his guitars.
Rune from Eternal-Terror visited us for his second part of the studioreport.
Day 20 Monday January the 24th
Today Espen G recorded the Grand Piano in another studio! We brought our own laptop, microphone and preamp and went to the studio at the "Institute of Music".
Day 21 Tuesday January the 25th
"Mr. Ormin Lange" himself - Stian Hovland Pedersen visited the studio today! (He represented the voice of Åsmund on our last album). He read an introduction on "Åsgårdsreia".
Stine sang during the day, and the string quartet returned in the evening to finish their recordings.
Day 22 Wednesday January the 26th
Stine started the day (she usually records one song a day). At 17:00 we had invited the press, and Adresseavisen (our local paper) and TV-Trøndelag (a TV-station) showed up! Informed them about our recording, listened to some songs and waited for the invation of 15 women: The choir Embla They sang on 5 songs - and it sounds good! The article in the newspaper will be published on Tuesday the 1st of February, and on Friday the 28th we will be on TV!
Day 23 Thursday January the 27th
Stine started as usual. Eystein took over, and finished recording his guitars. Espen G and Stein went to Stein`s home to record an organ, but it wasn`t in tune so we have to come up with something else...
Day 24 Friday January the 28th
Stine recorded more vocals. Stian H. Pedersen returned to read some lines on "Allvis". Espen H finished the recording of bass in the afternoon. In the evening Stine, Siv Lena, Espen G and Eystein played 3 songs at the birthdayparty of Kristin Sivertsen (Birger`s wife).
Day 25 Saturday January the 29th
Siv Lena re-recorded some violins. Stine finished singing, and Ketil recorded his last guitars.
Day 26 Sunday January the 30th
Espen G recorded the hammond organ!
